The St. Augustine Jazz Society is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to keeping jazz alive on Florida's First Coast.
History, Goals, Scholarship, Play It Forward (instrument donations):
The St Augustine Jazz Society was founded in 1989 by a group of musicians and area residents who enjoy jazz and swing music, good fellowship and the opportunity to serve the community. SAJS provides an important forum for the exchange of information among jazz enthusiasts within our area. Since our beginning we have presented and produced numerous jazz programs and events, bringing musicians and the public together to enjoy, appreciate and learn about jazz.
Our goals are:
THE ADVANCEMENT OF JAZZ
We support, promote and increase public awareness, interest and participation in jazz as an art form by producing monthly jazz jams, jazz concerts, and performances in support of civic functions.
We have Jazz Jams on the last Sunday of each month (with some exceptions) at the Royal St. Augustine Golf Clubhouse from 2pm-6pm.
The music is provided by our first-rate jazz musician members from around the area. Visiting musicians and singers are always invited to come and sit in. Just identify yourself, what instrument you play and sign in. The charge is usually $5.00 for members and $7.00 for nonmembers. There is no admission charge for Musicians or singers who perform.
SCHOLARSHIPS AND TUITION GRANTS
SAJS has endeavored to provide scholarships for outstanding high school seniors planning to continue their music education at the college, university or music conservatory level. In addition, possible recipients include college students pursuing graduate studies in music, who maintain a St. Johns County residence.
Tuition grants are also provided to students in the lower grades to attend accredited music camps at UNF to further their music education. To date SAJS has provided over $100,000 in scholarships, and grants to students of St Johns County.
The scholarships are funded in part through proceeds from our monthly Jazz Jams, 50/50 draws at the jams, and special fund raising events. However, the majority of the funding comes from private donations.
If you want to donate to the scholarship fund, send a check to:
St Augustine Jazz Society, PO Box 1505, St Augustine FL 32085
All donations are tax deductible.
